Living Things Basket — an educator's view
Sorting is the first step in understanding any science concept, and Living Things Basket builds its whole game around it. Every card has to land in its right basket: living or non-living, herbivore or carnivore, floats or sinks, natural or man-made, conductor or insulator, physical or chemical change, and in grade 6, mixture or pure substance, homogeneous or heterogeneous. Each grade has its own baskets, and in some levels three baskets sit side by side, so the child has to see the boundary between groups more precisely.
A concept built from its boundaries
A child understands what "living" means when they see what isn't living. Each card is a small decision about the boundary between two groups, and through repeating these decisions, the definition of the concept takes shape in their mind without ever memorizing a sentence.
Spotting the defining feature
A thing has several features at once; an apple is red, round and edible all together. The child learns to look past all the features and pick out just the one the baskets are asking for, and to switch that criterion when the level changes. This flexibility is part of the mind's executive skills, also used in problem-solving.
A fresh look at everyday objects
Levels like "floats or sinks?", "what does a magnet pick up?" and "the scientist's kitchen" return to things the child sees at home every day. Sorting on screen becomes a way to look at these familiar objects with a researcher's eye.
A pause before deciding again
If a card lands in the wrong basket, the basket flashes red for a moment and the card stays put so the child can think again. They learn to pause and reconsider their decision — a skill that moves them from a hasty reaction toward a considered thought.
A tip for parentsSet out a basin of water and bring a few safe household items like a cork, a coin, a leaf, an eraser and a plastic spoon. Before dropping each one in, have the child place it on paper in one of two columns, "floats" or "sinks"; then test it together and check the guesses.
