Little Explorer is a science observation-and-sorting game for primary school, grade 1 through grade 6. A misty meadow holds 8 to 14 scattered pictures; the child sweeps the mist aside with a magnifying glass and picks up only the things that belong to the requested group, like "find 3 living things!". Each target has an empty circle counter, so even a child who can't yet read numbers knows how many are left.

About the game

What's inside

  • 129 levels across six grades, each matched to that grade's science textbook
  • Grade 1: living and non-living, plants and animals, the body, food and hygiene
  • Grade 2: feathers or fur, egg-laying or live-bearing, wood, metal and fabric, sources of light
  • Grade 3: measuring tools, magnets, personal hygiene, mammals and egg-layers
  • Grade 4: electrical conductors, rocks, food chains, vertebrates and invertebrates
  • Grade 5: sources of heat, heat conductors and insulators, transparent objects, simple machines
  • Grade 6: helpful microbes, electrical devices and circuits, an earthquake kit, food chains
  • A Persian narrator reads each level's instruction
  • No blame for a wrong tap — the child is encouraged to try again

Little Explorer — an educator's view

The primary science textbook is full of "observe and sort" activities, and Little Explorer turns exactly that into a search game. A misty meadow holds eight to fourteen scattered pictures, and the child sweeps the mist away with a magnifying glass to pick up only what the mission asks for, like "find 3 living things!". Topics start with living and non-living things and fruit in grade 1 and move up to electrical conductors, vertebrates, heat conductors, simple machines, helpful microbes and an earthquake kit in higher grades.

Holding a criterion in mind

The child has to remember what they're looking for, "egg-layer" or "heat insulator", all the way to the end of the search, and weigh each picture against it. This is a working-memory exercise — holding a rule in mind while doing a task — a skill most classroom tasks lean on.

Searching with a system

The mist covers the whole meadow, and the child has to move the magnifying glass around the whole scene. They gradually learn to scan the scene in an orderly way instead of jumping around randomly, so nothing gets missed — a habit that also helps in catching mistakes in a notebook or reading a page closely.

A scientific trait behind the appearance

In higher grades, the way things look can mislead: the moon is bright but isn't a light source, and a metal spoon and a wooden spoon look alike, but only one conducts electricity. The child learns to look past appearance and sort by the scientific property instead.

Help sized just right

A wrong pick just gets a gentle wobble and the line "not this one, look again!". If it happens twice in a row, the magnifying glass itself drifts toward one of the targets, but the last tap is still the child's own. A good teacher does the same: shows the way, but leaves the credit of finding it to the student.

A tip for parentsIn the kitchen or the child's room, give an explorer's mission: "find 3 metal things" or "something made from a plant". Then ask them to explain why they chose each one; explaining the reason turns sorting from a guess into understanding.
