Sky Journey is a science game about the sky for primary school, grade 1 through grade 6. The child drags the sun along the arc of the sky, and the sky's color, the stars, and the shadows of a house and tree change along with it — for example, "it's bedtime — move the sun away". In other rounds, the child picks the right card from among several skies or moon shapes, or arranges cards in order.

Sky Journey — an educator's view

Sky-related concepts are hard for a primary-school child, since you can neither move the sun by hand nor watch Earth spin. Sky Journey closes that gap: the child drags the sun along the sky's arc and watches the sky's color, the stars, and the shadows of a house and tree change with it. It begins with "it's bedtime, move the sun away" in grade 1 and works up to sunrise in the east, phases of the moon, sundials, the seasons, the lunar month, and in grade 6, the planets and solar eclipses.

The child moves the cause themselves

When the child lowers the sun and the tree's shadow grows longer, they see the relationship between "the sun's position" and "shadow length" with their own eyes. A textbook states this relationship in a few sentences; here the child moves the cause themselves and watches the result, which makes understanding cause and effect more lasting.

Spatial imagination and directions

East and west, "which way does the shadow fall?", "facing the sun, back to the sun" — these levels have the child mentally rotate directions. Imagining the movement of Earth and the moon from an outside viewpoint is one of the hardest mental tasks in primary science, and the game builds it up step by step.

Science in the child's own life

In grade 1, breakfast, lunch and bedtime are tied to the sun's position, and in higher grades, Yalda night and the first day of summer, or comparing the sky over Mashhad and Tabriz. The child comes to see science as being about their own days and nights, not just a few pages in a book.

The sun returns gently

If the sun is left in the wrong spot, it drifts gently back to its starting point along with an encouraging line; after two tries, the correct part of the arc glows on its own. The child experiences trying and trying again as a normal, worry-free part of understanding.

A tip for parentsStand a pencil in modeling clay on a sunlit windowsill and mark its shadow's position with your child in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon on paper, without ever looking straight at the sun. Draw the moon's shape together for a few nights in a row too.
