Five Senses Island — an educator's view
In first grade, the very first science lesson is that the child comes to know the world through five channels. In Five Senses Island, the name of a thing or phenomenon appears, and the child drags the orb onto the guardian of the sense that perceives it: the smell of bread with smell, the roughness of a stone with touch. In grade 2, sound comes into play: the source of a sound, its loudness, its distance, and the fact that sound is made by vibration. Dragging the orb turns a mental choice into a hand movement that's easier to remember.
Knowing the body's doors
The child learns that every piece of news from outside enters through one of their own body's doors: eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin. This awareness is the basis for self-care; levels like "let's take care of our eyes and ears" tie that awareness to habits like sitting far from the television.
Multi-sensory observation
Levels like "three senses together" show that an apple is seen, smelled and tasted all at once; and the "without eyes!" level asks the child to imagine which sense would tell them about the world without sight. This is the same careful, all-round look that scientific method begins with.
Sharp listening
In grade 2, the child has to tell far and near, loud and quiet sounds apart, and say where a sound comes from. These fine distinctions exercise auditory attention — a skill also needed in class for following the teacher and telling the sounds within a word apart.
Seeing the answer in the moment
When the orb reaches the wrong guardian, the correct guardian lights up on its own and the next question arrives. The child sees the answer right away, with no blame at all; this calm, instant feedback helps a mistake become a learning point instead of a reason to give up on the game.
A tip for parentsMake a shoebox with a hand-sized hole and place a few safe objects inside, like a feather, a sponge, a spoon and a leaf. With eyes closed, the child guesses each one using touch alone. Then swap turns and let them pick something for you.
