A memory game with face-down cards. The child flips two cards and looks for matches; the two sides of each pair are different from each other — word and meaning, number and count, tool and job — so memory and understanding work together.
The classic face-down memory game is one of the oldest children's games, and Word Pairs turns it into a vocabulary-building tool. The two sides of each pair aren't identical, and the child has to understand the relationship between them: picture and word in grade 1; opposites, singular and plural, and jobs in grade 2; synonyms like "house means home" and Arabic plurals like "book and books" in grade 3 and 4; and in higher grades, proverbs, memorable verses and word families.
The child has to remember where each card was on the screen so they can go back to it once its match is found. Holding both the "what" and the "where" at once exercises working memory — a mental capacity used in reading, mental math and following instructions.
Learning "joyful means happy" or "poem and poems" as a pair ties a new word to a familiar one. This link makes recall easier and widens the child's vocabulary for reading higher-grade Persian textbook passages.
In grade 5 and 6, the child matches the two halves of a proverb or a line of poetry, and pairs poets' names with their books. This playful introduction to Persian literature nurtures interest in, and a sense of belonging to, the mother tongue.
If two flipped cards aren't a match, they turn back over and the child has only learned one new fact about where the cards are. Every unsuccessful turn is information for the next one. This experience teaches the child to keep trying patiently and steadily until the board is complete.
A tip for parentsMake a homemade memory game with cardboard: write a word on six cards and its opposite or synonym on six others. Take turns playing, and whoever finds a pair makes a sentence with that word.
