Town Clock — an educator's view

Reading an analog clock is harder for many primary-school children than adults expect: two hands with two different meanings turn on the same face, and the number under the big hand means something other than itself. Town Clock puts a big wall clock in front of the child, and they turn its hands with a finger. Grade 2 starts with o'clock and half past; Grade 3 adds quarter past, quarter to, five-minute steps, and matching a digital clock to an analog one; and Grade 4 moves on to working out time spans: how long it takes from breakfast to school, or, if a cartoon lasted an hour and a quarter, when it started.

Two hands, two meanings

When the child turns the big hand, the little hand moves slowly along with it, just like a real clock. With their own hand, the child sees that "half past 3" means the little hand sits between 3 and 4, not on 3. This hands-on experience cuts the most common clock-reading mistake off at the root.

Familiar mistakes, on purpose

The wrong options are the very mistakes teachers see in class every year: reading the next hour instead of the one before, or mixing up the two hands. Each time, the child has to tell the right answer apart from the common mistake, and that comparison is what makes the understanding stick.

Time in daily life

In Grade 4, time spans come with pictures of familiar parts of the day: breakfast, school, lunch, play, reading, and bedtime. Working out "How long did it take?" and "When did it start?" turns a textbook exercise into planning the child's own day, the foundation of the time management they will need in later years.

Clues instead of blame

If the child sets a hand in the wrong place, the clock stays where it is and the game simply says which hand to look at again. After two mistakes, faint golden hands show the right position. The child is never stuck, and they build the answer themselves instead of just being shown it.

A tip for parentsA wall clock with hands at home is the best companion for this game. A few times a day, ask "What time is it now?" and "How long until lunch?" If your child only ever sees digital clocks, switch your phone's clock to analog for a few days.
