Rescue Helicopter is a number-grid game for primary school, grade 1 through grade 6. An instruction like "one more than 14" sits at the top, and the child taps the right cell on the number grid; the helicopter flies over that cell and rescues a friend. Tapping the wrong cell gives a clue from the grid itself.

Rescue Helicopter — an educator's view

The hundred grid is one of primary teachers' favorite tools, since it puts the base-ten structure right in front of the child's eyes. In Rescue Helicopter, an instruction like "one more than 14" or "ten less than 57" appears, and the child taps the right cell of the grid so the helicopter can rescue a friend. Grade 1 is about finding a number up to a hundred and the middle number; grade 3 and 4 bring a hundred and a thousand more, and times tables on the grid; and grade 6 reaches millions and rounding to the nearest ten or thousand.

A mental map of numbers

On the grid, "ten more" means one cell down, and "one more" means the cell next door. The child sees the relationship between numbers as position and distance. This spatial picture helps place value become something tangible, useful later in multi-digit mental math too.

A clue instead of the answer

If the child taps the wrong cell, it wobbles gently and the grid itself offers a hint: "look at the cell next door" or "look at this number's column". This is exactly what a good teacher does — instead of giving the answer, they point to where to look, so the child corrects it themselves.

Gradually removing the support

In the early levels, the reference cell is marked with a colored frame. From partway through grade 2, this marker is removed and the child has to find the reference number on the grid themselves. This gradual withdrawal of support, called "scaffolding" in teaching, slowly builds a sense of capability and independence.

An effort with a kind result

Every correct answer ends in rescuing a friend, not just a checkmark. The child feels their mental effort has a visible, kind result. For many children this framing builds motivation more intrinsic than collecting points, and the game moves along unhurried and untimed.

A tip for parentsDraw a hundred grid on paper and stick it on the fridge. Pick a number each day and ask the child what's above and below it. In higher grades, round the price of purchases together to the nearest thousand tomans.
